GridCraft, ArtCraft's spreadsheet app
GridCraft is the ArtCraft team's free, open-source spreadsheet tool. Use this guide to check workbook imports, documented controls and current limits before choosing a download.
People searching for “ArtCraft Excel” are usually looking for GridCraft; earlier versions of its README described it in relation to Microsoft Excel, while the current README no longer does.
GridCraft in the Crafting Apps lineup
The official Crafting Apps listing describes GridCraft as a spreadsheet and data tool and labels it In development. Its README introduces it with this line:
Spreadsheets and data; an open-source, high-performance modern spreadsheet application, built in pure Rust.

Opening workbook files in GridCraft
The README’s compatibility summary distinguishes native workbooks from imports with a narrower scope. Keep original files and check the result with your own workbooks.
| Format | Documented scope |
|---|---|
| XLSX | Native format. The README says styles, themes, formulas (including dynamic arrays), tables, conditional formats, validation, comments, hyperlinks, charts, pictures, sparklines, PivotTables and print settings survive round trips. Real-world fidelity remains a roadmap priority. |
| .xls (97-2003) | Opens values, formulas and number formats. Formatting and objects are not yet supported. |
| CSV, TSV | The README documents reading and writing these exchange formats. |
| XLSB, ODS | Imports worksheet data using saved values instead of formulas. This is not a claim of full workbook preservation. |
GridCraft’s spreadsheet controls
The README’s “Familiar” bullet lists GridCraft’s ribbon, formula bar, Name Box, sheet tabs and keyboard shortcuts. It also documents a fill handle, formula entry with colored references, Format Cells, Paste Special, conditional formatting, tables and charts.
These are GridCraft’s documented interface elements. They do not establish complete workflow coverage; the README notes that full keyboard navigation and other ribbon access keys still need work. Source: familiar controls · Source: access-key limits.
How complete is GridCraft?
The project’s own README roadmap calls GridCraft an alpha and says depth, fidelity and file compatibility remain rough. Its figures are project estimates, rather than measurements by this guide:
- 89% of standard ribbon commands in the project’s catalog are covered.
- The worksheet-function figure is 513. The README now clarifies that this is a parity inventory, not a count of working implementations.
- Its weighted estimate is about 50% ready for real work, based on what spreadsheet users rely on.
The project’s next-up list is:
- XLSX fidelity with real-world files.
- Very large workbooks and multi-threaded recalculation.
- Greater chart depth.
- Text coverage in every script.
- Further .xls import work.
Limited .xls import is already documented; its presence on the roadmap does not imply full formatting or object support. These figures describe GridCraft’s own roadmap and do not establish finished workflow coverage.
GridCraft CLI and MCP automation
The README describes a headless MCP server, a bridge to a running window and a command-line tool for formulas, workbook commands and reading ranges. A JSON control channel adds pointer and keyboard input, dialogs and screenshots. The following block is copied verbatim from the official automation section:
claude mcp add gridcraft -- gridcraft-cli mcp # headless MCP server
gridcraft-cli mcp --connect 7979 # MCP bridged to a running window
gridcraft-cli eval '=XLOOKUP("b",{"a","b"},{1,2})' # → 2
gridcraft-cli run --sample budget --cmd 'home.bold={"range":"B4:F4"}' --out budget.xlsx
gridcraft-cli cat budget.xlsx --range B4:F15 # aligned text table
gridcraft-cli commands --search chart # every command and its paramsHow to download GridCraft
Start at GridCraft on getartcraft.com or the official GitHub Releases page. You can also use ArtCraft Launcher to install the desktop apps.
Naming difference in the snapshot: repository metadata points to /apps; the README points to /apps/gridcraft. We retain both official URLs without assuming why they differ.
The latest snapshotted release is v0.14.2, published . These are exact asset names from that release; download them on the official Releases page.

Windows troubleshooting
GridCraft startup backend override (Windows):
$env:WGPU_BACKEND = "vulkan"
& .\gridcraft.exe
Remove-Item Env:WGPU_BACKEND # restore the default for later launchesAn explicit `gl` override can bring the driver crash back on affected systems, and `vulkan` can bring back a crash in some Intel UHD Graphics drivers (`igvk64.dll`, #120).

Frequently asked questions
What is ArtCraft’s spreadsheet app?
GridCraft is ArtCraft’s Rust spreadsheet application for formulas, tables, charts and data analysis. The official listing labels it In development.
Can GridCraft open .xlsx files?
Yes. XLSX is its native format. The README documents round trips for styles, themes, formulas, tables and other workbook elements, while also listing real-world XLSX fidelity as ongoing work.
Can GridCraft open old .xls files?
The README says legacy 97-2003 .xls workbooks open with values, formulas and number formats. Formatting and objects are not supported yet; .xls import remains on its next-up list.
Is GridCraft free?
Yes. The official listing describes the Crafting Apps as free and open source. GridCraft’s README offers a choice of MIT or Apache-2.0 licenses; bundled assets retain their own license terms.
Can GridCraft import formulas from XLSB and ODS?
Its XLSB and ODS import uses saved worksheet values instead of formulas. This differs from its native XLSX workflow and from the limited formula import documented for .xls files.
