PdfCraft is a free Rust app from the ArtCraft team for pdf reading and organization. Check its documented capabilities and gaps before relying on it for your work.
What is PdfCraft?
Its README describes a clean-room Rust reimplementation of the Adobe Acrobat workflow. The official listing describes the apps as free, open source and built from scratch in Rust.

Key features
Read and organize
Search and navigate documents, rearrange pages, combine PDFs or split them into smaller files. The README documents comments and form filling/authoring.
Protect and automate
Password handling, redaction, sanitizing, basic digital signatures and an Accessibility Checker are documented. The project is still being hardened against problematic files.
File formats
| Format | Documented behavior |
|---|---|
| Viewing, organizing, combining, splitting, forms and protection workflows. | |
| Word export | Documented as losing layout; do not rely on faithful conversion. |
| Office-to-PDF | Not implemented yet. |
Full XFA forms, broader OCR coverage and professional validation workflows remain incomplete. This guide does not infer additional import or export formats.
Status and limits
The listing says Early alpha. Existing-text editing, especially CJK and right-to-left text, Office interchange, signature tokens and long-term online validation need work. OCR beyond Latin script, Preflight and PDF/X/UA are incomplete. The web build cannot print yet. The README reports crashes and hangs still being found during fuzzing.
The Windows MSI is for all users and needs administrator privileges; per-user installation overrides are not supported. The portable build uses a local data folder when its portable marker is present.
Download and install PdfCraft
Start at PdfCraft on getartcraft.com or the official GitHub Releases page. You can also use ArtCraft Launcher to install the desktop apps.
Naming difference in the snapshot: repository metadata points to /apps/printcraft; the README points to /apps/pdfcraft. We retain both official URLs without assuming why they differ.
The latest snapshotted release is v0.6.0, published . These are exact asset names from that release; download them on the official Releases page.
Windows 6 release files
Match x64, arm64 or x86 to your computer. The MSI is an installer; the portable ZIP is the alternative for running an unpacked build. Follow the README for permissions and portable settings.

Windows troubleshooting
The README documents graphics-driver startup problems and a backend override. Read its full warning before using the following verbatim commands.
msiexec /i "pdfcraft-<ver>-windows-x64.msi" /qn /norestart INSTALLDESKTOPSHORTCUT=0An explicit `gl` override can bring the driver crash back on affected systems.
Official README, Windows downloads
See the README for additional shader-compiler and renderer-fallback notes, where documented.
macOS 2 release files
The universal DMG is the desktop app for Apple silicon and Intel. The README labels it signed and notarized. A separate CLI ZIP, where listed, contains the command-line tool.

Build PdfCraft from source
The following first-run block is copied verbatim from the official README. Run it from the repository checkout; commands without a clone step assume you already have the code. Read the README for Rust toolchain requirements, operating-system dependencies and optional fonts.
git clone https://github.com/storytold/pdfcraft
cd pdfcraft
cargo xtask models # fetch the OCR models Scan & OCR needs (release builds include them)
cargo run --release -p pdfcraft -- some.pdf # desktop app
cargo xtask demo-pdf # build the showcase PDF used in these screenshots
cargo xtask screenshots # regenerate every screenshot in this READMEPdfCraft vs Adobe Acrobat
The comparison here covers only PdfCraft's documented capabilities. Its README positions it against Adobe Acrobat; the official apps listing labels it Early alpha. The feature summary describes documented tools, and status and limits records the gaps. File support is scoped by the format table.
This is a documentation-based review, not a hands-on test or a guarantee of replacement readiness. For your workflow, test a copy of a representative file and check the result before moving important work.
Agent, CLI and MCP features
The PdfCraft README documents a command-line tool, a JSON control channel and an MCP server. These expose app operations to scripts and agents; the exact commands and protocol depend on the repository. Read the official automation documentation ↗
